Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a former draper's apprentice, opened his store in Hampshire, England. By 1870 the business had established itself in making outdoor attire, for example they created waterproof yet breathable frabic called the "gabardine."
In 1901, the iconic Burberry Equestrian Knight logo was created with the Latin word "Prorsum" which means forwards. Burberry was still being worn by people that went on hikes or expeditions in extreme environments for example, in 1911 and 1914 the company became the outfitters for Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the south pole, and Ernest Shackleton, who led a expedition across Antarctica. The brand started to grow when they made trench coats for british military personel during World War 1. After the World War it became popular with civilians with its iconic check/plaid on the lining of the coat.
During the 70's and 80's stars started wearing the clothes and the company then created independent retail stores around the world which contributed to its growth in the 90's.
Moving to the present the company is doing better than ever now selling streetwear and doing collabs with other brands/fashion designers like Gosha Rubchinsky (Collab in photo below).

In 2018, the creative director, Christopher Bailey, was replaced by Riccardo Tisci. With Riccardo as the new director he proceeded to change the logo and monogram of the brand. Last year in 2018, Burberry got in a bit of a controversy after it was revealed that the brand was destroying unsold clothes, accesories, and perfumes for the past 5 years worth over 90 million pounds. Also in february of 2019 the brand had to issue an apology after showcasing a hoodie with a noose around its neck during a show.
In my opinion, this brand is one of the most iconic clothing brands with its versatality and stylish looks. Their clothes can be worn by anyone no matter how old or young they are. They have both trendy and classy outfits which allows them to reach more people rather than focus in one style. The brand is 163 years old now and is still growing as we talk. The history of this brand and its iconic fashion is something that needs to be noticed.
